Easter Prayer

Welcome to Bedford Salvation Army Prayer walk.
This has been designed to enable the whole church to reflect on Holy Week and to pray for our community. Inside this pamphlet you will find images and Bible readings for Holy week, along with prayer suggestions for our local area. We encourage you to record your thoughts and prompts from the Holy Spirit. The back page contains a map for those unfamiliar with the area. You can take a virtual walk at home, walk with a friend from the hall, or, if you’d like, you can book a time slot at the hall to spend reflecting on these passages and praying either with your ‘bubble’ or alone. We would ask you to book before the day and wear a mask whilst inside the hall. |
Palm Sunday

Matthew 21 :6-11
The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus was in the centre of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!” The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked. And the crowds replied,“It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” As you begin your time, raise your Hosannas and offer your praises to our faithful promise-keeping God.
Welcome Jesus as King, and offer Him this time. Invite Holy Spirit to speak, to prompt and to guide your thoughts and prayers. |
Temple

Matthew 21:12-17 Jesus entered the
Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!” The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David.” Our building stands on the edge of an area of depravation, where families struggle to make ends meet, where addictions destroy lives. We cannot ignore the pain of our neighbours.
Cry out to God against injustice and poverty in our local community. Pray for the chains of addictions to be broken, and that we would be agents of transformation. |
Last Supper

Mark 14:22-27
As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.” And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the cov- enant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.” Riverside Square is an area for eating and sharing together. The hospitality industry has be heavily hit along with other businesses during this year.
As you sit in this space, pray for people who have lost jobs and are struggling financially due to the impact of Corona virus. |
Gethsemane

Mark 14:32-41
They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. “Abba, Father,” he cried out“everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” He returned and found the disciples asleep. Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say. When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But now—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. St. Mary’s gardens, during term time, often finds many students from Bedford College relaxing between lessons during the warmer weather.
Please pray for the mental health of our young people, for the staff in the education sector who have had to adapt to virtual platforms and have supported pupils and their families. Pray for the well-being of staff and pupils alike. |
Golgotha

Mark 15 (selected verses)
They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means“Place of the Skull”). They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it. Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each piece. It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. A sign announced the charge against him. It read,“The King of the Jews.” Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!” As you stop at County Bridge , a place of crossing , pray for Bedfordshire and all its diversity.
Pray for wisdom for all those in local authority. For those caring for others and delivering policies. Pray for the hospital staff who have been exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally from the impact of covid. |
The Tomb

Mark 15
Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph), and Salome. They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there. This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached, Joseph of Arima- thea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honoured member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.) Pilate couldn’t believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet. The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body. Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus’body was laid. Pray for boldness in your personal witness to what Jesus means to you.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal those opportunities to be a bridge builders', introducing others to Jesus. Pray for the witness of the church, that our love and unity might help build bridges for all. |
Easter Hope!
Praise God for Easter Hope!
Pray that this Easter the witness of the Church will be as strong as ever. Pray for those who need the transforming love of God in the communities you live, work or go to school in. As you leave from this place, know that the Risen Lord goes with you and Holy Spirit empowers you. May you be blessed and be a blessing this Easter & beyond. |
Mark 16
Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magda- lene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’body. Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way they were asking each other,“Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him |
Prayer is conversation with God, a crying out of our hearts. The Bible also gives us the confidence that God not only listens to our prayers, but that prayer is powerful.

Inside the Salvation Army building we have our very own Prayer Room; a place that encourages the exploration and power of prayer.
The Prayer Room is open to anyone and is available whenever the Salvation Army building is open (which is the majority of the week).
